Their friendship started very far back, when he was only still a Padawan. She was about the same age but the Jedi Council knew nothing about her.
Luna was her name. She had long flowing auburn hair, deep chocolate coloured eyes and slightly darkened skin from living on a planet where the skies were always clear. Her body was slender and she wasn’t small, taller than the average woman on her planet, Bakura. She also had extraordinary power which her family didn’t like her using so she used to venture out into the mountains near her home and practice there alone.
That was where he met her, up in the mountains. But not of Bakura. She had run away from her home and had travelled to a planet by the name of Bastion where she had been made a slave to serve the leader of one of the outlying colonies of rebels on the planet. The two Jedi had been sent to negotiate peace between two of the colonies.
Luna was the first person that Obi-Wan noticed fully. Her hair had been cut and the rest of it was pinned to the back of her head. Dressed in slave clothing, she was made to serve the leader with his food and drink during the day then she was locked away in a cell during the night with two other men who saw fit to beat and molester her. No matter how hard she fought back, she just couldn’t keep them off her. Obi-Wan thought she looked almost lifeless.
When he had pointed her out to Qui-gon, he also admitted that he’d felt a connection to her. “That’s the force. You’re sensing the force in her,” Qui-gon explained. Obi-Wan nodded and couldn’t take his eyes off her throughout their short stay. After a while, she noticed him staring at her. She smiled at him although her eyes were screaming ‘please, help me’.
That night, after the negotiations of the peace settlement, Obi-Wan told Qui-gon of his thoughts and how he felt she couldn’t be kept locked up in that place if she was truly another Jedi. Qui-gon promised to help set her free, but not that night. “We’ll do it tomorrow, when we’ve had some rest.” Obi-Wan just nodded again but inside he felt like she needed to be out sooner rather than later. Who knew what went on in that cell at night?
Later that night, he made sure that Qui-gon was asleep, and then snuck out back to the outsiders camp. After he successfully navigated his way back into the camp, he set out for the main building where he assumed the prison would be. He was right.
It was dark and dank inside the building. No guards were on watch, which he thought was strange. The only noises he could hear were the sounds of snoring which emitted from various cells. The cell right at the end of the corridor however had different sounds that came from within it. Grunting sounds. He stepped up to the bars to see the two men abusing the girl from before.
Before he had even thought of the consequences he had shouted, “Hey! Leave her alone.” Both of the men looked up at him, menacing looks upon their faces. Obi-Wan gulped.
“Who are you?” snarled one of the men.
“Get off her,” said Obi-Wan, trying to sound confident.
“I said, who are you?”
“Am I going to have to use force?” Obi-Wan said. He regretted it almost as soon as the words left his mouth. The other man slammed his whole body against the bars which made a loud clanging sound. Obi-Wan jumped backwards slightly. The two men cackled.
“Ignore him,” grunted the first man to the man at the bars.
The second man nodded and attempted to turn around when he realised that his feet weren’t on the ground. He let out a holler of surprise as he hit the adjacent wall and fell unconscious. The first man stepped away from the girl. “Who are you?” he breathed at Obi-Wan looking frightened.
“That’s only for me to know,” said Obi-Wan. He reached past his robes to his belt where his lightsaber was kept. He drew the lightsaber and cut through the bars as if they were jelly. He stepped into the cage and offered the girl a hand. Her bony fingers felt as cold as ice. “We need to get out of here, now,” he told her as they hurried back down the corridor and out into the fresh air.
Luna looked like she’d suddenly been hit by a train. “What’s the matter?” Obi-Wan asked.
“The stars,” was all she said, “I haven’t seen them in two years.” She then turned to look at him, “what is your name?”
“Obi-Wan Kenobi. And you?”
“Luna Mae Lynn.”
“Okay, now we really must get out of here.”
He had no idea how he was going to explain all of it to Qui-gon but he knew that this was the wisest thing he’d done in his whole life.
Little did he know that if they’d left her there for the night, she would have died.
